Roof area = footprint length × width × √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²). Order area = roof area × (1 + waste ÷ 100). One roofing square is 100 square feet.
A 40 × 30 ft footprint at 6:12 pitch has about 1,341.64 SF of roof area. With 10% waste, order coverage is 1,475.80 SF, or 14.76 squares.
For a simple roof with uniform pitch. Include overhangs in footprint dimensions. Complex roofs should be divided into sections. Ridge, starter, flashing, underlayment, vents and tear-off are separate.
